Let’s talk about a very important subject. Make-up wise, of course… Everyone who interacts with me on a regular basis knows I can’t live without eyeliner! It’s an integral component of my make-up routine and I cannot help but feel naked without it.
I LOVE all eyeliners – liquid, gel or pencil – and I have to do a wing EVERY TIME, I just feel tired and also kinda sad without.
One of the main benefits of wearing (winged) eyeliner is that it elongates the eye. If you’re like me and are born with a relatively round eye shape, eyeliner is a great way to create a lifted, sexy cat eye look.
I’m obviously not the only one who is obsessed with eyeliner: Could you picture Gwen Stefani, Sofia Loren or Alexa Chung without their signature cat eye looks?
Speaking of Alexa: I really love this video by beauty guru Lisa Eldridge, which shows the model’s technique for mastering her eye make-up.
Isn’t it comforting to see that even Alexa Chung, who wears this look everyday, needs at least three minutes to make sure both eyes are symmetrical? And also, it’s great to see that she – just as everyone else – uses a cotton bud (with spit!) to correct the wing.
So don’t be intimidated and just go on and try to paint a fierce liner! If you’re still not too sure whether your hand is steady enough, there’s always this simple trick: just use a piece of tape on the outer corner of your eye.
If you use tape to master your eyeliner, it’s important to make sure it’s not too sticky and doesn’t pull too much on the delicate skin around your eyes.
Here’s a good tutorial by Eimear McElheron, if you’re feeling brave:
No matter which technique you like, the most important thing you’ll need is TIME! So don’t even try to master a beautiful cat eye on a busy Monday morning… it’ll only end in tears.
BUT with a reasonable amount of time and the right tools, everyone can do eyeliner. Just have faith!
Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen, 56 US$
This really expensive one by Tom Ford is dual ended, which allows a super precise application. A lot of YouTubers and influencers rave about this product and I’m sure it’s worth a look!
Are you not ready to try a classic liquid eyeliner yet? Then this one is perfect for you:
Clarins 3-Dot Eyeliner, around 40 US$
It’s a good trick to start with dots where you want to put the line instead of going right in. Clarins adapted this method and created the 3-Dot Liner:
For the more advanced eyeliner aficionados, I’d recommend a gel liner.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eye Liner, around 35 US$
Don’t be afraid of the gel, this formula glides on really smoothly and is extremely long lasting. This is my go-to for days when I want a slightly smoky liner that stays put all day… and seriously, this stuff is goof-proof. For some reason, I always land the perfect line AND flick on my first try!
Of course, there are also great options at the drugstore…
Essence Liquid Ink Eyeliner Waterproof, around 3 US$
The ultra fine brush makes precise application easy, and it’s surprisingly long-wearing.
If you’re still not convinced to try a winged liner, maybe the next product will make a difference. It’s a corrector pen!
Dior Flash Corrector, around 30 US$
Isn’t this great? This make-up eraser makes cleaning up your cat eye really simple. I use mine almost every day and seriously couldn’t do a liquid liner without it!
The only thing you need now is mascara and blush and you’re ready to go. Think «Alexa»!
